A Look at the History of Daiquiri

This rum-based cocktail has been the heartthrob for almost every party over a century now. It is a combination that consist of sugar, flavoured sweetener and lime in with rum.

Named after a beach in Santiago (Cuba), Daiquiri is a word of Taino origin. The drink was originally created by Jennings Cox, an American mining engineer. During the Spanish-American War, Cox was posted in Cuba and that is how this drink got its name after a popular Cuban landmark. Later in 1902, the Daiquiri was unveiled to the world when William A. Chanler, a US Congressman decided to open up Daiquiri clubs in New York City.

Originally, this delicious beverage was prepared in a tall glass loaded with crushed ice, some sugar and lime syrup. Only later was white rum added to the mix.The glass would then be frosted with sugar. A long handled spoon called a ‘bar spoon’ was used to prepare and stir the drink.

Over the years however, the method of preparation has completely evolved. Nowadays, the ingredients are added to a shaker or cocktail machine in order to obtain the perfect consistency. And crushed ice is often now replaced with shaved ice.

A number of variations of the drink have joined the Daiquiri Club over the years. Below are the three most popular Daiquiris which people love to drink:

  1. The Hemingway Daiquiri:The most interesting thing about these drinks is that the basic ingredients remain the same throughout. Just a few tweaks here and there; and a new drink will be ready for you to savour. This special variant is a fine combination of White Rum, Fresh Lime Juice, Fresh Grapefruit Juice, Simple Syrup, and Maraschino Liqueur. All these are put into a blender along with ice and as a result what you get is a yummy cocktail.
  2. The Ginger Daiquiri:The Ginger Daiquiri is another popular cocktail which you will find into end bars and restaurants. The three basic ingredients i.e. White Rum, Fresh Lime Juice and Simple Syrup remain the same. Here, some crushed ginger and orange bitters spruce up the taste of this drink.
  3. The Classic Daiquiri:Now, this is the simplest one. Just the three basic ingredients, loads and loads of ice and a cocktail shaker or slushie machine; that is just all that you need in order to obtain this wonderful drink.

Make sure that you never take out Daiquiri from the list while throwing a party. Don’t forget to add these three variants to your cocktail list next time!
